Parents/Carers update 29 January

Dear Parents/Carers,

As we reach the end of the week there are some updates I would like to share with you.  I am, as ever, impressed with the remote learning that the students have been undertaking in challenging circumstances and we look forward to seeing all students back in school as soon as possible.

Early Finish Thursday 4th February

School will finish early on Thursday 4th February for Year 8 Subject Teacher Meetings which will take place online as scheduled.  On this day there will be no lessons for students after the times below:

Years 7, 8, 9 and 12 will finish their live lessons at 1.40pm

Years 10, 11 and 13 will finish their live lessons at 1.10pm

Students who attend key worker and vulnerable provision will also go home at these times.

Government announcement on school reopening

As I am sure you aware, the Government announced on Wednesday that they hoped schools would begin reopening on 8th March at the earliest.  We will of course monitor the ongoing developments before and after half term and let you know the details of any reopening as soon as possible.

Ofqual Consultation on GCSE, A Level and Vocational Exams

The consultation ends today and we have submitted responses from the staff at Cheam High School.  We expect Ofqual to announce the outcome of the consultation by the end of February and we will of course share the outcome and how it affects the students as soon as possible.  In the interim, we encourage students in Year 11 and Year 13 to continue working as best they can, completing the work set by their teachers to the best of their ability.

Increasing data allowances on mobile devices to support disadvantaged children

You may be aware that the government announced further support for remote learning by introducing a scheme which temporarily increases data allowances for mobile phone users on certain networks. This is so that children and young people can access remote education if their face-to-face education is disrupted.

Who can get help?

  • If students do not have fixed broadband at home
  • If students cannot afford additional data for their devices
  • If students are experiencing disruption to their face-to-face education

Children with access to a mobile phone on one of the following networks might be able to benefit:

  • Three
  • Smarty
  • Virgin Mobile
  • EE
  • Tesco Mobile
  • Sky Mobile

Other providers may join the scheme at a later stage.

What we will need to know:

  • the name of the account holder
  • the number of the mobile device
  • the mobile network of that device (for example Three)

If you feel you are eligible for this please email secretary@cheam.sutton.sch.uk with the information above.

We have created some useful links on our website if any students or parents/carers need help using our main platforms, Show My Homework and Google Classroom:

Parental Feedback and Communication

Thank you for the many positive emails regarding our remote learning provision – we continue to share these with staff who appreciate them very much.  Likewise, on the rare occasion an issue has arisen, we thank you for the polite and measured tone of communication during challenging circumstances.

Please continue to communicate with us regarding how your children are getting on and school staff will continue to support you and your children as best as possible.

I wish you all a restful weekend,

Regards

Mr P Naudi
