Code Club: University of Surrey Finals!
On Monday 24th June, a group of 14 Cheam High Students from Years 7, 8 and 9 went to the University of Surrey to attend the finals of the Open School Coding Competition.
The students have been working very hard throughout the year in Code Club on the development of game apps to support a charity of the students’ choice. The winning entries had been judged and selected by Mr Naudi, Miss Connolly and Ms Teague earlier this term.
During the day at the University of Surrey, the students had the chance to showcase their work, peer-review other schools’ work, attend workshops, lectures and Q&A sessions. The students presented their work in front of professors from the University of Surrey, computer scientists from Red Hat and volunteers from Samaritans. The competition was tough and all groups present demonstrated creativity, passion and great effort. The day finished with the winners announcements and Naadirah, Hiran, Aroush and Eshal with their app Digital Hope won for best peer-reviewed app, best idea and came third overall! The girls were called on stage three times! They came home with a fantastic trophy, a wonderful Bluetooth speaker as well as Amazon and Audible vouchers.
