Industrial Action 1st February

Industrial action (Wednesday 1st February)

You may be aware from media coverage that the National Education Union (NEU) have declared proposed strike action that will affect Cheam High School on the following dates:

  • 01 February 2023
  • 02 March 2023
  • 15 and 16 March 2023

To give some context to this the NEU is the largest single education union and in Cheam High School we have a sizeable proportion of staff that are members of this organisation.

As we would not be able to safely supervise and educate the full school while a significant number of teachers are not working there is a prospect of a partial/full closure of the school on 1st February. I will know more over this week, as there are ongoing conversations with union leaders and representatives from the Department for Education that may yet see the strike action not occur. However, I wanted families to be aware of the possibility of this and that some students may not be able to attend Cheam High School on that day. There are further dates also proposed (Thursday 2nd March, Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th March) later this term.

I am sorry about the potential disruption to you and to your child’s education. I understand that this situation may be frustrating, and ask that all members of our school community continue to treat each other with respect. We recognise our teachers’ legal right to participate in industrial action whilst remaining committed to providing a safe and secure environment for our students.
