Mobile Phones System

  • All students need to have their phones turned off and in their bags, along with all accompanying accessories, from gate to gate
  • Accessories include wireless Air Pods, wired headphones/earphones and smart watches
  • Students will be required to hand over their device, to any staff member, should they be seen with it, without question, and collect it from their Year Team at the end of the day
  • Sixth Form students only are allowed to use devices in or behind the X block i.e. Sixth Form Zones and outside areas of the X block but not upstairs
  • Sixth Form students are not allowed to use devices when they leave the X block i.e. to go to lessons, to see teachers – this includes the car park
  • Sixth Form students are allowed to use in lessons for work purposes only (teacher permission) but they should not be out on desks
  • A clear sanctions ladder has been put in to place for repeat offenders and the gate to gate policy ensures the rules are very clear.

Occasion

Action

1st

The device will be given to the member of staff and placed with the Year Team where it can be collected at the end of the school day.

2nd

The second time the student is caught with their device it will be given to the member of staff and will be placed with the Year Team.

The student will be required to meet with their Year Team before the device is returned and this will be 30 minutes after the end of the school day. 

The Year Team will discuss with the student the repeated failure to follow the mobile phone rules. 

3rd

The third time the student is caught with their device it will be given to the member of staff and will be placed with the Year Team.

The student will receive a warning from the attached member of Leadership and issued a 60 minute detention.

4th

The fourth time the student is caught with their phone it will be given to the member of staff, they will have it confiscated, and parents/carers will be required to collect it from the school office. 

The Year Team will contact the student’s parents/carers.

5th

The fifth time the student is caught with their phone it will be given to the member of staff, they will have it confiscated and taken to the Year Team. Students will be required to hand the phone/accessories in everyday for two weeks and will also receive a 90 minute detention.

The Year Team will contact the student’s parents/carers.

 

Defiance

If any student refuses to give their mobile phone or accessories to any member of staff this will be treated as defiance.  The incident will be logged on IRIS and “Referred to Year Team”

FAQs

  • Where do we stand on personal liability for items we will take?

We take no liability for anything brought onto site. 

  • What about students who have diabetes notifications on their phone?

The first aid team has sent to all staff a list of students allowed to use mobile phones for medical purposes.

  • If student contacts home during day what do we do?

The sanctions will be applied as per the ladder. Should a student need to contact home during the school day they can go to the Year Office.

  • What do I do if a student wants to stay after school for club and have not told their parents? 

We want to encourage students to stay for extra-curricular activities so, whilst monitoring them, let them quickly make contact home and then put the phone away afterwards.

  • What happens with phones on school trips?

This will be at the discretion of the trip leader and students will be informed about this in the letter that goes home about the trip.
