Thanks to an environmentally minded ex-student who donated her Jack Petchey Award winnings to the school Eco-Committee, we are pleased to announce that the Food Tech department now has its very own worm compost bin!
This means that food waste produced through students’ cooking work, such as vegetable peelings, can now be eaten by our new wiggly friends. The worms excrete the food waste as compost known as ‘vermicompost’. We are collecting this nutrient-rich material to help us grow vegetables on site in the Spring.
Of course, once our home grown produce has been used for cooking, the scraps will then return to the worm compost bin and the cycle will begin again, creating maximum nutrition and minimum waste.
