Want to teach?
An excellent environment in which to develop my skills as a teacher.
Initial Teacher Training
Cheam High School is recognised as a centre of excellence for teaching and learning. Cheam High School supports prospective teachers by providing high quality training and professional development that is relevant, personalised and focused on how to best support student progress.
We work closely with Teaching School Alliances, Universities and Colleges to provide high quality Initial Teacher Training placements and are committed to building strong partnerships that support all routes into teaching.
All ITT placements are offered at the discretion of subject leaders and senior management according to staffing levels and commitments within the relevant subjects. This ensures that we are able to provide a high quality school experience and the very best support for our trainees.
For students who wish to follow a university led route into teaching, Cheam High School works in partnership with a number of ITT providers to offer PGCE placements across a range of subjects.
School Direct Placements
Cheam High School works closely with the Sutton Secondary School Teaching Alliance and Glyn Surrey SCITT to offer School Direct placements for students who wish to follow a school based route into teaching. Please visit the Sutton SCITT website at https://www.suttonteach.org.uk/sutton-scitt for more information or GLF SCITT website www.glftt.org
Mentoring and Support
Cheam High School provides excellent guidance and advice for all our ITT students. Every trainee is assigned an experienced mentor within their subject who meets with them weekly to discuss progress. This helps students to develop individual teaching skills as well as working towards the required teaching standards. All placements are overseen by the member of the Leadership Team with responsibility for Training and Development in their capacity as Professional Co-ordinating Mentor (PCM).
In addition to providing a structured induction day, we offer a programme of professional studies throughout each placement to support teaching practice. Sessions are delivered by senior members of staff or teachers and pastoral staff who have particular areas of expertise. Topics include Behaviour Management, Feedback and Marking, Special Educational Needs, , Stretch and Challenge, Use of Data and Pastoral Care. Evaluations of these sessions are very positive. In addition, all trainees are welcome to attend any training sessions that are being run for school staff during their time in school.
ITT students are provided with a laptop to help them during their placement and will be given a welcome pack which includes the CHS Staff Handbook and School Diary. They will also be allocated a school email address for use during their time in school. Trainees will be attached to a tutor group throughout their placement and will take part in pastoral activities. All students are encouraged to involve themselves with the life of the school, including extra-curricular activities, off site trips or visits and participating in Parents' Evenings. Trainees will also be expected to attend whole staff briefings and departmental meetings.
We are very proud that in evaluations trainees rate the quality of their placement at Cheam High School as excellent and we welcome their feedback to help us to improve our ITT provision.
