Sutton Schools Table Tennis Championships
The U13 and U16 squads had their first taste of competitive action this year travelling to Wilson’s and Wallington respectively to compete in the Sutton School’s Championships.
It was the first time the U13s had played in a competitive match and they faced some particularly strong and experienced opposition. They performed really well and the experience will stand them in good stead for the forthcoming league campaign.
It was a different situation facing the U16 squad – they went in as defending champions knowing they were among the favourites to win the tournament. They comfortably beat Carshalton and Harris and won a very close match against Wilson's. This set up a final game against the other favourite team, the hosts, Wallington.
Cheam need to tie the match, winning two out of four games to successfully defend their title. Luca won his game first – the other three games went into a third and final set. Seiji and Priyansh narrowly lost, in two very close games. This left it up to number one seed Ibrahim. Tied at 9-9 – he held his nerve and his serve to win the final two points and secure an excellent victory for Cheam.
This was an excellent team performance from all five boys and they should be very proud of their achievement.
They now advance to the London stage of what is a national qualifying tournament. Having won the plate competition last year – they have their eyes on being overall victors this year and gaining a place in the national finals.
SQUADS
U13: Luke M, Mattia M, Jaiden V, Noah D.
U16: Ibrahim U, Seiji N, Priuyansh S, Hajune L, Luca P.
Cheam v Wilson’s – Table Tennis
Cheam took on Wilson’s in their first London South Table Tennis League game of the season.
The U13 team showed impressive improvement, in what is only their second competitive game, with Hugo making his debut. Although they lost out to Wilson’s, the games were close. Jaiden won his game and all four of the boys made the more experienced Wilson’s players work hard to earn their victories.
The boys will continue to improve as they gain more competitive experience – and with three of the team playing a year up as Year 7s, the future looks promising for this team.
The U16 team were beginning their defence of the league, they won for the first time last year. Wilson’s top two seeds are incredibly strong and managed to win three out of their four singles games. But Priyansh and Luca remained unbeaten in their singles ties and then all four boys won their doubles games, meaning that Cheam won the match 7-3.
An excellent start to the league for the U16 team – Well done.
