Careers Matters 3rd February

Careers Matters – the people supporting our school with careers provision

The London Enterprise Adviser Network (LEAN) helps young people build the skills and experiences they need to lead successful futures. It does this by connecting businesses with schools and colleges to create a network of business volunteers called Enterprise Advisers, with school or college Careers Leaders. This ensures that young people are aware of all the career pathways and opportunities available to them. At Cheam High School we are lucky to have two very enthusiastic Enterprise Advisors, who are supported by Michelle, an Enterprise Coordinator.

Michelle is the Enterprise Coordinator on the London Enterprise Advisor Network. Prior to this role Michelle worked in the hospitality sector in a number of leadership and management roles including apprenticeship programs and HR.

Young people from schools and colleges in London are the beneficiaries of LEAN’s work, as the organisation connects businesses with schools and colleges. Michelle has connected our school to our two Enterprise Advisors, Daniel and Denise and works with us to help ensure we prepare our young people for their next steps.

Denise is a HR Global Projects Manager at GSK, a science-led global healthcare company that researches, develops and manufactures innovative pharmaceutical medicines, vaccines and consumer healthcare products.

Prior to this role, Denise has 14 years’ experience in Human Capital Management Consultancy, working in different Consultancy firms in Brazil, Ireland and UK and clients from a variety of sectors. Her main focus was human capital process redesign, assessments and proposal of solutions.

Denise is looking forward to working with the school and students on supporting career programmes.

Daniel is the Client Partnership Director at Route2Work Group, a careers development business that specialises in supporting both individuals and organisations looking to build future careers and capability across demand digital & technology skills.

Prior to his current role, Daniel has 20 years’ experience in talent, learning and recruitment, working with organisations across both the public and private sectors and a broad range of specialist areas including Technology, Finance, Product Management and Transformation.

Daniel has previous experience working with schools on career events and is looking forward to working with our school and students on our current and future careers programmes.

Coming soon; look out for details of our first LIVE on-line careers talk, run by Daniel, our Enterprise Advisor. The session will take place after school on Tuesday 23 February and will run for 30 minutes. A great opportunity to find out more about the skills needed to succeed in a very competitive world of work.

Ivana O’Brien is the Next Steps/Careers Adviser for Cheam High. She also works in other schools and with adults, providing outplacement services. Ivana supports the students with, amongst other things, options at the end of Year 11/13, A’ level choices, universities and career choices.

Ivana is normally in school once a week. She is currently delivering on-line interviews on Zoom. These take place during the school day and are proving to be very popular. If you think your child would benefit from a Next Steps interview please contact Mrs Elliott (Careers Coordinator) on aelliott@suttonmail.org.

Some feedback from Ivana’s recent sessions with students:

“Thank you for all the help. Trust me if I could, you’d get a 10/10!”

“Thanks very much for your time yesterday. It was really helpful and has substantially broadened my horizons.”

“Hi, thank you so much for speaking with me, this has been really helpful and informative.”

“Thank you very much for sending me these notes, the session was very helpful and thank you so much for your time.”

In addition to Denise, Daniel and Ivana, the school has a Link Governor for Careers. Katie is newly appointed to this role and is looking forward to finding out more about careers provision at Cheam High School.
