ECO Trip to Yourspace Community Garden

Yesterday I had the absolute pleasure of leading a group of 12 students as part of the Eco Committee to the Community Gardens situated in Seears Park, Sutton. Yourspace is a wonderful community environment and open to all
The activities were led by Lucy who volunteers and Kevin who established the gardens and they inspired us with their knowledge and enthusiasm which never waned throughout the day.
When we arrived, we received a warm welcome and Lucy showed us around the space and we learnt all about different habitats that we can create in our gardens and school environments, to nurture wild life. We then set to work, harvesting compost and using this to create a new plant bed, which we filled with flowers. We also learnt how to take soft cuttings, how to identify parts of plant that can be used for this and propagate these – a very resourceful way of increasing the planting at school for very little cost.
The students did a tremendous job and worked hard together as a team throughout the day. Thank you so much to Lucy and Kevin – we had a wonderful educational visit and look forward to passing on our new found knowledge!
Eco Visit
By Anja E Year 10
On Tuesday 5th July, the Eco
Committee visited YourSpace gardens in Sutton taking part in a variety of gardening activities.
Firstly, we got a tour of their magnificent gardens and plentiful wildlife around the site. We learnt the budget friendly way to fill raised flower beds and we took part in shovelling woodchips and soil, sifting decomposed woodchips ad soil and later filing the flower bed with the correct layers. We then selected the flowers which we could plant and positioned them in the best looking order possible.
Afterwards, we visited a different part of the site where we met the founder of YourSpace, Kevin P who taught us how to take cuttings from any plan we see and propagate them. We were given the opportunity to take our own plant cuttings and grow plants at home.
It was an amazing experience as it taught us a lot of key skills and techniques that we can use in the future.
