What makes Music special?
Students at Cheam attend a Music lesson once a week until Year 9, when the subject becomes optional. We facilitate lessons in our purpose built Performing Arts building which is well equipped with ample performance space and a specialist music studio.
Music at Cheam High School encompasses four core values: creativity, perseverance, independence and excellence and allows students to become more expressive and confident, as well as developing their understanding of Music as an academic discipline.
In addition to all of the instruments that students are able to access in lesson, the following resources are also available to students before school, after school and during break and lunchtimes;
• Mac Suite
• Recording Studio
• 3 Practice rooms with Acoustic Pianos and Drum Kits

What other opportunities are available in this subject?
We offer a wide variety of extra-curricular opportunities that are available to students throughout the school. Our extra- curricular curriculum is very well attended and includes:
• Bandeokee
• Music Technology Club
• Choir
• Music Theory
We also take students on a number of trips throughout the year to support their learning within the lessons these include;
• West End Shows (in the past this has included: Lion King, Sister Act, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Matilda, Frozen)
• University Visits for tours of working studios and a look into Higher Education Provision
In addition to this there are a number of opportunities to perform at Music events throughout the year such as;
• Whole School Production
• The Annual Christmas Carol Concert
• CheamFest
• Arts in the Park
What topics will you study in Years 7 and 8?
Students in Years 7 and 8 attend a Music lesson once a week as part of their weekly timetable. Our curriculum is informed by the current National Curriculum for Music and the Non- Statutory Music Curriculum. It embodies the same values that students should ‘perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods’.

What topics will you study in Years 9, 10 and 11?
At Year 9, Music becomes optional and students can choose to pursue our BTEC Level 2 Technical Award in Music Practice.
Students gain the theoretical skills required to succeed whilst understanding how to apply that theory within a practical context.
Year 9 schemes of work include;
• Musical Genre exploration
• Solo and Ensemble Performance development
• Composing for Screen - Using the computer programme (Soundtrap to compose for
stage and screen)
• Musical Showcase of skills and musical products
Year 10 and Year 11 include schemes of work that support and are focused on the skills and knowledge to be successful in the BTEC Level 1/2 in Music Practice.

• BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Music Technology (Sound Engineering)
• BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Music Performance
