FURTHER UPDATE: Early School Closure 23rd-26th June

Dear Parents/Carers,

As you may well be aware, the Met Office have now extended their extreme heat warning into Friday.

As such, we will continue with the same timings as today for the school day tomorrow with all students finishing at 12.20pm, making sure we avoid the more extreme heat of the afternoon.

As with today, if any student needs to stay in school until 1.10pm as per our first adaptation of timings, they are most welcome and should head upstairs in the Technology Block at 12.20pm, where a member of senior staff will be based.

For now, unless you hear from me over the weekend, please assume that the school day will return to normal timings from Monday.  We will continue to allow students to wear their PE kit instead of their usual uniform until we have completed our Activity Day programme on Wednesday.  After this we will re-evaluate based on the weather forecast.

Please ensure that your child wears their lanyard with their cashless card to school every day, regardless of uniform arrangements.

If the forecasts are accurate, we can all look forward to a cooler and more productive week next week.

Kind regards,

Mr Naudi

News Item @ 24/06/26:

Please see the below letter emailed to parents/carers today:

Dear Parents/Carers,

Given the extent of the current heatwave, and the impact on the running of the school, I have made the decision to close school at the end of Period 4 tomorrow (Thursday) whilst the Red Heat Alert is still in place.

This means that students will be dismissed at 12.20pm.

If this causes any difficulties for you and you require your child to remain on school site until 1.10pm, they are most welcome to and should go upstairs in the Technology block after period 4 where a member of the school leadership team will be stationed.

It is very frustrating to have to reduce school time further but the atmosphere in classrooms is currently very challenging. Sadly, our school was not designed to manage such high temperatures. We have, of course, provided cooling devices wherever we can and are looking into what we can do longer term to make situations like this more manageable.

As stands, we intend to finish at 1.10pm on Friday as planned.

Regards

Mr Naudi
Headteacher

News Item @ 22/06/26:

PLEASE NOTE EARLY SCHOOL FINISH TIMES

The week ahead, especially from Tuesday to Friday, is forecast to be very warm. With it expected to reach up to 37 degrees outside, many classroom spaces will become hotter than this, especially in the afternoon, which are not conditions conducive to learning when rooms are filled with students and staff.

Due to this, we are going to run compressed days from 8.30am to 1.10pm from Tuesday 23rd June.  This will ensure that students will still have 5 lessons each day, although each lesson will be slightly shorter.  This will mean that they will not have to be out at lunchtime in the heat but disruption to their education will be minimised.  We will be cancelling period 6 and work will be set for Year 12.  Year 12 exams will continue as normal.

Students who wish to have a school meal before leaving school will be able to purchase this either at break time or at 1.10pm before going home.

Students should attend as usual in either:

- Normal school uniform
- A school shirt and skirt or trousers (there is no need to bring in a tie or a blazer)
- School branded PE top and school skirt/trousers (school shoes)
- School branded PE top and school branded PE shorts (short socks and trainers)
- Students must wear their lanyard at all times whichever uniform they wear while on school site.

Please ensure that your child has a full water bottle at the start of the day which they must refill at social time.  Please also ensure that they are wearing high factor suncream.

Our plans at present are that CheamFest will go ahead as planned on Friday evening.

We will update you on Friday about next week, when we hope to return to a normal school day.

If this early finish causes any issues for you, please contact the school either via email at office@cheam.sutton.sch.uk or telephone on 020 8644 5790.
